Navajo Youth Bikepack Series

Last winter, during my visit with Jon Yazzie in Kayenta, Arizona, within the Navajo Nation, he briefly mentioned his plans to offer a youth bikepacking series as a way to get local kids outside and introduce them to activities they might not otherwise experience. After lots of brainstorming and planning, Jon Yazzie and Nadine Johnson of Dzil Ta’ah Adventures have partnered with Four Corners Guides to provide bikepacking and bikerafting tours for disadvantaged youth in the area—providing the opportunity for them to experience the thrill of exploring on bicycles and packrafts within the Navajo and Four Corners regions.

As far as programming goes, the series is based around two trips within the Navajo Nation, led by Jon and Nadine, followed by a final bikerafting adventure led by Steve “Doom” Fassbinder in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. Although they’ve been successful in bringing on some sponsors, the Navajo Youth Bikepack Series needs your help to ensure the best possible experience for everyone. Lizzy Scully of Four Corners Guides has launched a GoFundMe campaign with a goal of raising $3,000 to help offset the costs of running the trips, the money raised will go directly towards food, transportation, and gear—some of which will be given to the youth after the program ends. They are also accepting donations of bikepacking gear, so if you’ve got any bags lying around collecting dust, you can reach out through the GoFundMe page to organize shipping.
